Blackout Poetry Workshop

April 12, 2026 | 2pm- 4pm

Transform a landmark Supreme Court ruling into poetry and art! This blackout poetry workshop is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Impressions: Black Spirit in America (on view through May 2026 at the Museum of Art and Archaeology, MA& A). Presented in partnership with the MA&A, participants will create poems from the 1857 Dred Scott v. Sandford Supreme Court decision. The process mirrors the acts of destruction and healing central to Rashid Johnson’s Good Love on loan from Art Bridges. Co-hosted by writer and co-curator Donald Quist and  MA&A curator Rima Girnius, participants will transform their poems into works of art by decorating them with stencils, stamps, and other mark-making tools. Artist Askia Bilal will discuss his practice and its connection to blackout poetry.
